In their collaboration, Vilhjálmur Yngvi Hjálmarsson and Sölvi Steinn Þórhallsson make up rules, games, scenarios, observations, sparks, gestures and together they follow them through. Within the limitations there is freedom to explore.The duo works in a multi-disciplinary and open ended process, ranging from sculptural works to installation, video, text and sound based works. Their artistic process starts with conversations where they share thoughts, feelings and inspirations. There is a certain moment of excitement, the lightbulb turns on, butterflies roam in the stomach. This moment is what they want to chase in their collaboration. One thing leads to another which leads to another which leads to another and so on and so on and so on. A rolling snowball.
In their first exhibition together, Frá Héðan (From Here), Sölvi and Villi sent each other five sparks through mail between Iceland and Finland. When they both had received the sparks from each other they decided that both of them would interpret every single spark into a work, however big or small. With the sparks combined they had 10 sparks. The rule being that they would only show each other their works on the first day of installing the exhibition. This mystery invited many surprising links and unexpected but pleasant turns for the exhibition.
